I’m the “Unknown Operations Guy”

It was that time of year again to submit mid-years. I was prepared until my laptop went down the night before it was due.

No big deal?

For me it is as I consider myself the “Unknown Operations Guy” similar to stuntmen in movies. Doing all the challenging and dirty work behind the scenes to make the actors look like stars! I am in a corporate world and it’s easy to forget or highlight your achievements when you are part of a global team due to the speed to deliver and the quality you need to produce on a regular basis.

I do not document every interaction with a client, when I save someone from making a visible quality error or even when I ask tough questions to improve a process.

But.

I should.

Ensuring a successful mid-year review as you get older in the workplace involves proactive preparation, effective communication, and demonstrating your value and contributions. Here are some steps to help you achieve a positive review:

1. Prepare Thoroughly

  • Review Goals and Achievements: Reflect on the goals set at the beginning of the year and gather evidence of your accomplishments. Document specific projects, tasks, and results that showcase your contributions.
  • Update Your Records: Keep your records up-to-date with any additional training, certifications, or skills you’ve acquired since your last review.
  • Self-Assessment: Conduct a self-assessment to evaluate your performance objectively. Identify areas where you’ve excelled and areas for improvement.

2. Highlight Your Experience and Expertise

  • Leverage Your Experience: Emphasize how your experience has contributed to the success of projects and the overall goals of the team or company.
  • Mentorship and Leadership: Showcase any mentorship roles you’ve taken on or leadership initiatives you’ve led, demonstrating your commitment to helping others grow.
  • Problem-Solving: Provide examples of how you’ve used your experience to solve complex problems or navigate challenging situations.

3. Communicate Effectively

  • Be Clear and Concise: Present your accomplishments clearly and concisely. Use data and specific examples to back up your statements.
  • Listen Actively: Be open to feedback and show that you are actively listening and willing to learn and improve.
  • Set Future Goals: Discuss your future goals and how they align with the company’s objectives. Show your commitment to continued growth and contribution.

4. Focus on Continuous Improvement

  • Seek Feedback: Actively seek feedback from colleagues and supervisors throughout the year to identify areas for improvement before the review.
  • Professional Development: Engage in continuous learning and professional development opportunities. Show that you are committed to staying current in your field.
  • Adaptability: Demonstrate your ability to adapt to new technologies, processes, and changes in the workplace.

5. Showcase Your Value

  • Quantify Achievements: Where possible, quantify your achievements with metrics such as increased sales, improved efficiency, or cost savings.
  • Team Contributions: Highlight how you’ve contributed to team success and collaboration.
  • Customer Impact: If applicable, showcase how your work has positively impacted customers or clients.

6. Address Ageism Proactively

  • Challenge Stereotypes: If you sense ageism, address it tactfully by emphasizing your ability to learn, adapt, and contribute effectively.
  • Promote Diversity: Advocate for the value of a diverse age workforce and how it benefits the organization.
  • Stay Positive: Maintain a positive attitude and focus on your strengths and contributions rather than potential biases.

7. Prepare for Potential Challenges

  • Anticipate Questions: Think about potential questions or concerns your reviewer might have and prepare thoughtful responses.
  • Be Honest and Open: If there have been challenges or setbacks, address them honestly and discuss what you’ve learned and how you plan to improve.

8. Follow Up

  • Create an Action Plan: After the review, create an action plan based on the feedback you received. Set clear, achievable goals for the remainder of the year.
  • Regular Check-Ins: Schedule regular check-ins with your supervisor to monitor progress and address any ongoing concerns or opportunities.

By preparing thoroughly, effectively communicating your value, and demonstrating a commitment to continuous improvement, you can ensure a successful mid-year review and continue to thrive in your career as you get older.

My midyear was submitted late. It took several days to fix my laptop i.e. Fedex to send a part. I put a little extra effort into it to highlight my achievements, but it was worth the extra attention to detail.
